PRE OPERATIVE & POSTOPERATIVE INSTRUCTIONS
CATARACT or REFRACTIVE LENS EXCHANGΕ
Preoperative
- Inform the doctor ten days at least prior to surgery about anticoagulation treatment
- Start preoperative drops as prescribed; usually a drop three time per day three days before surgery
- Eat very light the day of the surgery
- Take all medications as usual
Postoperative
- Open your eye patch at home and start your drops until it is time to sleep
- You will probably take a pill the same day in the evening
- Do not touch the eye
- Do not rinse your eye with tap water the first seven days
- Do not swim the first 15 days
- You may look at the TV, cook, promenade, travel and even go to work right after your surgery, but first ask your doctor or assistant.
- Avoid stressful situations and sudden movements for a few days
- Avoid contact of the eye with dust, soil and wind for at least ten to fifteen days
- You may lift weights, but avoid weights that demand moderate to intense effort by you
- You may bend low and tie your laces slowly
Call us if you notice sudden loss of vision, if you have pain and your eye become red and swollen.
VITRECTOMY
Preoperative
- Inform the doctor ten days at least prior to surgery about anticoagulation treatment
- Start preoperative drops as prescribed; usually a drop three time per day three days before surgery
- Do not eat the day of the surgery
- Take all medications as usual except those for diabetes. For anticoagulation drugs special guidelines required.
Postoperative
- The doctor will tell you if you remove the patch the same day or the next day in the morning
- Some cases of retinal detachment and macula hole demand a posturing. The doctor will inform you in detail
- Do not touch the eye
- Do not rinse your eye with tap water the first seven days
- Do not swim the first 15 days
- You may look at the TV, cook, promenade, travel and even go to work right after your surgery, but first ask your doctor or assistant.

When you have gas inside the eye it is forbidden to travel by airplane or in high altitudes. There is a risk to lose your sight.
